THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM
While the Vaud civil justice system primarily applies federal law, its judicial organisation is specific to the Canton.
The canton is divided into judicial districts, whose boundaries may vary depending on the type of judicial authority.
The District Courts handle matrimonial disputes, either with a single judge or a panel of three judges. The Justices of the Peace oversee matters concerning the protection of minors and adults, as well as certain inheritance cases.
The Cantonal Court functions as the Supreme Court.
Compared to other Swiss cantons, the Vaud judicial system operates efficiently and quickly. Several courts have launched pilot projects implementing the Parental Consensus approach.
